NR, did you drive in the dirt road towards the lost lodge place and hike from there?

@abscam: Yes, this route starts on the Coldstream Rd at Horseshoe Bend (Union Pacific railroad). See the full trailhead directions at http://www.nevadarambler.info/blog/?p=1556

You can drive past the trail head if the creek don't rise.
Not knowing that, we parked at the trail head in the track and walked. I would drive further next time and trade 600' of climbing, 2 miles each way, of some less spectacular dirt road for more time on the top of the ridge which has awesome views.
The road continues past the parking area where this track started and ends about 2 miles in. It turns left past the parking area and follows the rail road tracks till you come to a creek which you follow under the railroad bridge. The creek is really a wet gravel road at this time of year; but could be an issue earlier. The road then doubles back to meet where the track crossed the railroad tracks. Easy, wide, dirt road to Lost Trail Lodge where we saw a Subaru wagon parked. Much past Lost Trail Lodge you probably need FWD to get up a moderately steep hill with loose rocks, and full sized SUV/Pickup ground clearance for a few water bars. Not sure how hard the hill is to ascend, but we were passed by an ancient Power Wagon pickup going up it with no problems. There is room to park a few cars where the road becomes a trail and the road past the lodge is wide enough to park on the shoulder in many places. Not an exciting OHV trail but not trivial either.
