The idea was to extend the well-known Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks Challenge walk-excursion in a 2-day route, in this first half the concept was to get off the Northern to Settle train just outside the national park and enter going through the various landmarks offered by the area (which I consulted above in the GMaps). Verbi gratia, Malham Cove and Tarn, Scaleber Force and Dry Valley. Someone with a more powerful physique (and not missing the first train like it happened to me) might try to cover other well-known landmarks near Malham as well as Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar. There is a critical issue however, I clearly underestimated the equipment necessities for the Bivac at the top of the Pen-y-ghent. You need to go with a powerful sleeping bag and I would recommend carrying 2 mats per person, one to lie on and one exclusively to stop the wind that lowers the thermal sensation to a minimum. This second one should be supported against one of the walls that separate the properties (there is actually one that crosses the entire upper part of the Pen-y-ghent) and sleep attached to it. Needless to say, some powerful coat won’t hurt, I did it in the middle of summer and it got cold at every turn, so as not to get into the fateful night. That said, if you want to avoid the Bivac you can always spend the night in Horton and the next day do the standard Three Peaks.
