Itinerary description
Epic hike through the two valleys and around the three lakes of the Alpstein mountain range in the Appenzell region of Switzerland. The hike should take two days, and you can easily split up the distance by staying in one of the huts along the route (either Bollenwees, Meglisalp, or Seealpsee). You will definitely need to be in good hiking shape as the trail includes two big climbs - The Bötzel pass and the Ebenalp. There is a particularly steep section with ropes between Meglisalp and Seealpsee. The ascent to Ebenalp will take you past the famous Aescher hut built in to the cliffside of the mountain. Many of the huts on this trail are also part of the Appenzell Whiskey Trail.
