Itinerary description
This is a circular tour based on Thorner, which can be reached by the 7 bus that goes between Leeds and Harrogate; there is ample on-road parking in this attractive village.
The tour starts with a walk up Carr Lane, where the Mexborough Arms is on the corner, (this is one of three pubs in Thorner). Just after the corner with Station Lane a footpath leads off to the right. This goes across several fields before reaching Oaklands Manor, where there is a short walk along Thorner Lane before turning left on a footpath.
This footpath initially runs parallel to an old railway line but gradually descends until it reaches the old track bed. Some way along there is a turn off to the right and a steep scramble to get down from the embankment. However, there is a rope attached to the trees to make it easier.
Eventually the earthworks at Pompocali are reached and then a bridleway followed to Milner Lane where the road is crossed and another bridleway taken. When Stubbing Moor Plantation is reached the route is to the left of the wood.
After the wood a footpath leads to Kennels Lane which is a very long country lane (it would only carry farm traffic). A path to the right is taken that crosses Thorner Beck by a footbridge and then goes across open fields before meeting Milner Lane on the right and Milner Lane leads back to the centre of Thorner where there are bus stops and the Fox Inn. The exit onto Milner Lane needs to be looked for as it is not marked from the fields and is not that visible.
The tour offers the chance of seeing old railway architecture and the interesting earthworks of Pompocali. The going is mostly easy and there is some variety between woods and open fields. I think there are five stiles along the route.

Thanks for sharing this lovely walk that me and my wife did today, stunning views, new lamps in the field, wild garlic everywhere with the bluebells out. Lovely easy walk
