Stuart Marshal Route 28.
Summary
A hard day near Bassenthwaite Lake trying to follow Stuart Marshall’s Route 28 from his ‘Walking the Wainwrights’ book. Not the best of routes I have ever followed. All in all the day included a 2km detour due to a no public access sign at Old Scales Farm, a few hard slogs through some heather clad slopes and a bit of a fight in a forestry trying to be clever by taking a short cut. Anyway the scenery was a bit different/nice, the weather great and I got seven Wainwrights out of the way.
Route Suggestions: Even though the route was downloaded from a reliable source I did not particularly like it. I won’t labour on each point but add If you decide to download this gpx file I have attached a further jpeg OS overview with alternative route suggestions.
Parking: Adequate car park at the start in the forest. Small van size max.
Route: Good paths, no paths, boggy paths, steep paths, forest paths, heather, a minor battle with a forest and a bit of forest road in the end. Good fell views.
Route Statistics: A sweaty 22.50km and 1,330m in 7.5 hours.
