Itinerary description
Shikoku Pilgrimage 2022!
We started walking this 1400km-long historic trail on the Shikoku island of Japan today.
This is Masako’s 2nd time walking on the pilgrimage all in one go and Erik’s 4th(!!) time.
We are so excited that we are walking together this time as a couple 6 years after we met on this trail.
Since we are lucky not to have any time-restriction on how many days we could take to complete the pilgrimage, we are going to visit all 88 temples of Shikoku 88 pilgrimage and 20 temples of Shikoku Bekkeku pilgrimage all at once. Also, we will walk some alternative routes on the way to add more natural and interesting trails to mostly paved roads of most-commonly-used pilgrimage route. So, the total distance at the end will be most likely way over 1400km and we don’t know how many days we need to get to the goal. Probably 2months or more.
We started walking from the former Okazaki port at the east edge of Naruto city. It is the starting point of old Muya travel road and where many pilgrims from mainland of Japan used to arrive by ships to start their pilgrimages. On the way to Temple 1, for about 15km, we visited some extra temples that have been associated with temple 1 and Shikoku pilgrimage.
After T1, T2, T3, we called it a day and now staying at a very interesting lodge, not so far away from Temple 3.
As always, we recorded our walking logs and my YAMAP account has today’s GPS logs and route maps, as well as much more photos.
