Itinerary description

We did this walk with the DAARA group lead by Tony. We went by train from Dublin to Dundalk, where a bus was waiting to take us to the starting point which is between Riverstown and Knocknamona. We took a laneway beside some house which lead us to the foothills of the Cooley Mountains. It was a nice gentle climb to the top where we had our lunch. Now! we started in sunshine, then we had rain and a cutting wind, some fog, followed by more sun as we arrive in Carlingford. The descent is easy and the views are spectacular. Carlingford is a lovely little town, with plenty of places to visit. The ruins of the Priory established in 1305 at the request of Richard de Burgo and closed by Henry VIII in 1539, the Church and King Johns Castle. Built by Hugh de Lacy around 1186, from where there are lovely views of the Mourne Mountains. Legend has it that King John stayed here for three days in 1210 ad.The bus took us back to the train from Dundalk to Dublin.
