Itinerary description

The Chaguaramas National Park is located in the extreme North Western Peninsula on the island of Trinidad, West Indies. This park spans and area of 14,572 acres and also includes several offshore islands, some of which contain magnificent caves. The total land area of the park is 12,000 acres and the islands are just about 2,572 acres. The vegetation is largely tropical mountain forest...
This walking trek starts at the corner of the Western Main Road and the Macqueripe Mail Road. It traverses the historic Lumber Lane Trail, the Edith Falls trail, the Macqueripe Bay Trail (via the Macqueripe Mail Road and not the Edith Falls to Macqueripe Bay Hiking Trail), and the old Satellite Tracking Station via the “Bamboo Cathedral.” Most of these facilities were used by the U.S. Military throughout World War II as underground fuel storage sites. The tracking station base was also used during the early 1960's as a B.M.E.W.S. early warning radar site, as well as serving as a missile tracking site on the U.S. Air Force Eastern Test Range...
This trek is best done early. This is because there is little canopy cover along the Macqueripe Mail Road and by mid-morning the humidex values can reach as high as 40°C and above. This introduces the very real possibility of heat exhaustion and heat stroke if you are not sufficiently hydrated. My personal advice is walk with a lot of water, electrolytes, and a light snack. You'll need quite a lot of insect repellant because the mosquitoes along the inner trails are out of this world. Take lots of photographs because the area has a very high wildlife density. There are quite a bit of non-venomous snakes, red howler monkeys, Capuchin monkeys, wild hogs, ocelot, silky ant-eaters, dozens of different bird species, and reptiles like the giant iguana and caimans. It makes for a lovely day of hiking and if you're lucky, as I was, you'd have all the trails to yourself!
Happy Trails.

Very nice trail... This could prove to be a difficult hike if it is not started early enough to get out of the direct sunshine and heat... Saw quite a bit of monkeys along the trail though...
