Itinerary description
We made a 5 day hiking trip in the accursed mountains (Bjeshkët e Nëmuna) in the west of Kosovo. For the time of the year (end of October) the weather was fantastic. Cold nights but sunny days. We spent the nights outdoors, wild camping underneath a blanket of twinkling stars and waking up to the sound of a babbling creek outside our tent. We didn’t see a single soul in the mountains except for some squirrels and birds.
The Accursed Mountains, the southernmost part of the Dinaric Alps, stretch more than 60 kilometres (40 mi) from Lake Skadar along the Montenegrin–Albanian border in the southwest to Kosovo in the northeast. We flew from Dusseldorf to Pristina in the morning and made a direct transfer to Peja (Peć). After we found gas for cooking we left some luggage at the Rugova Valley Tourist Information Center. Thanks guys! We made a quick stop at the Patriarchal Monastery of Peć (Pećka Patrijaršija) and started our adventure. The monastery was the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church from the 14th century.
We walked trought The Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park (Parku Kombëtar Bjeshkët e Nemuna). It encompasses 630.28 km2 of mountainous terrain, with numerous lakes, dense deciduous and coniferous forests and alpine landscapes. On the top of the Montenegrin-Kosovo border we hit the famous trails of the Via Dinarica and Peaks of the Balkan for several miles and headed for the highest peak in Kosovo Gjeravica (2630 meters). We finished our trip in Deçan and took the bus back to Peja. Public transportation in Kosovo is great.
