Waypoints
Cabot Square
GPS accuracy in the Cabot Square area is poor due to the interference of many tall buildings. The GPS accuracy improves around the Docklands Museum and stays good for most of the route.
Museum of London Docklands
The museum has free entry, with a suggested 5 UKL donation. It covers the history of the area's docks and warehouses from their founding to WWII and the modern era. It also has a fascinating section on the history of African slavery in regard to the economic development of the City and the progress of British trade.
Up Staircase
Take staircase to upper level here to more easily access the River Thames footpath.
The Grapes (1583)
A very old pub with a real fireplace, and a raised deck overlooking the river. There are several other pubs in this area, and many farther to the west along the river.
Brewery Wharf
A narrow footpath follows the river's edge in this area. At least one riverfront restaurant here.
Tablet to remember explorers of northern seas
"This tablet is in memory of Sir Hugh Willoughby, Stephen Borough, William Borough, Sir Martin Frobisher, and other navigators who, in the later half of the 16'th century, set sail from this reach of the River Thames near Ratcliff Cross to explore the northern seas".
Shadwell Basin
An old drawbridge allows large ship access to Shadwell Basin, however it appears the basin is currently disused for shipping. The Prospect of Whitby pub is near the basin entrance. "London's oldest riverside inn - circa 1520"
West of Shadwell Basin
A section of the old canal has been converted to a modern water feature.
Tobacco Dock
There appears to be an interesting small shopping arcade here (but closed on the day). A couple of imitation full scale sailing ships are placed between the arcade and the canal.
Abandoned Canals
The canals in this area are disused and lock doors removed, however the sides and old fittings are mostly intact.
St. Katherines Docks
A large interconnected network of active ship basins, with a central pub. This is a more touristic area within easy walking distance of the Tower of London.
The Dickens Inn
This large pub can be a busy lunch stop for International visitors from the nearby Tower of London Area.
Tower of London
The route includes the promenade along the Thames in front of the Tower of London, passing the famous "Traitors Gate". Tickets for the Tower are a short walk further to the NW.
Jubilee Walk
A popular walk on the south bank, connecting Tower Bridge and London Bridge.
South end of (new) London Bridge
There is a busy road level crossing before getting to Borough Market.
Borough Market - east section
A busy food market with lots of nearby pubs and restaurants. The produce has a continental flavour; for example, it's hard to find English stilton, but easy to find French and Swiss comparables.
Millennium Bridge
A footbridge crossing the Thames, connecting the Globe Theatre and St. Paul's Cathedral areas. The Tate Modern Art Gallery (free admission) is very close, and has a cafeteria with a river view on its upper level.
St. Pauls Cathederal
Famous historical London landmark. Underground stations nearby. Known to many from the wedding of Charles and Diana.
