Hike 1 - Start

Start: Hello and welcome to the first trail of the “Car Park Lots Hikes”. We are at the 3rd avenue next to the KFC restaurant. Look around. Just from here, we can already see many parking lots, the largest of all is the Superstore parking lot across the street. When I started this project, I could not have imagined how much space of downtown Whitehorse is dedicated to cars and, in particular, to spaces to park those cars. Let’s start by walking the perimeter of the KFC parking space and then continue following the Wikiloc trail. While walking pay attention to your surroundings, if you have been in here before notice how different it is to explore the place by foot and how much aware you are of the surroundings when you transit them with a slower pace. When you see a Viewpoint in the Wikiloc trail, stop and listen to the audio linked to that viewpoint. Ok lest go then…

Viewpoint 1

Viewpoint 1: At this viewpoint we are at the 2nd avenue, one of the main roads of the city, and across we can see the Shipyards park. How has your experience been so far? I personally found that walking the lots was a bit tricky because I had to be aware of the cars and I felt like I was an invader in their space, but then I thought that it is actually the other way around, cars are the invaders in our city, a space that should be reserved for pedestrians. Let’s continue, and now let’s pay attention to the aesthetics of the place. I find that these parking lots are unattractive spaces designed for a quick visit, they are secondary to the establishment that host them. That makes me think that we have created big ugly spaces in the heart of our city only intended to be used briefly. We can reflect about this point while we walk to the next viewpoint.
