Itinerary description
The route to the highest peak of the Peloponnese, Taygetos, starts from the mountain hut in Sparta. It's an easy hike to reach the highest peak, Profitis Helias. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Mani Peninsula, the Messinian Gulf, and, if you're lucky to witness a sunrise, experience the pyramid effect, which is the shadow of the mountain cast on the Messinian Gulf.
Don't forget to bring at least 1.5 liters of water, a windproof jacket (it can get chilly at the peak), a map, and the knowledge to use it, along with a compass; these are essential when venturing into the mountains. If you lack confidence in your abilities, there are always local experts available to guide you.
