Itinerary description
15.12.19 To save time we tried driving to katafygio by dirt road starting from Pigi Maganiari, but halfway we decided to stop and not to risk getting stuck. Walked to katafygio, combining dirt road and marked trail.
Then we followed a classic route to Profitis Ilias until the point where it turns sharply to the left, we continued to the right following unmarked trail (we wanted to reach the ridge a little north from Athanati Rachi). Whole week before our trip it was episodically snowing on Taygetos, and the day before there was a heavy snowfall and strong winds. Our way was gpassing through some slopes that were covered with progressively thicker ice layer on top of snow, so at some point we turned back, as it wasn’t safe to continue with equipment we had.
Then we followed a shortcut to join the trail leading to the top of Profitis Ilias peak, went up to the pass (Portes) to look at the other side of the mountain. From there we turned back and went down following classic route (not recorded).
