Itinerary description
There are six different trails you can do around four lakes (and you could actually go through all of them since they are all loops). This route is the Eagle Loop which is marked in red on the map and you also see red posts along the path that indicate the right way.
The whole trail is beautiful but there are LOTS of mosquitoes and apparently bears. We didn’t see any thankfully but make sure to take bear spray and talk/make noise all the way so you don’t surprise the bears if you do encounter one.
I will share a few tips the lady of our hotel told us about bear encounters:
For black bears: stand tall, raise your arms and make noise yo intimidate the bear until it goes away.
For brown bears: do quite the opposite… you don’t want to make any eye contact so they don’t feel challenged and charge at you. Carefully lay on the ground either face down or in a fetal position but cover your head and vital organs. The bear will probably be curious but continue on its way. If it does charge at you, spray them with bear spray as fast as possible when they get close enough (no farther than 30ft for it to make effect) and back away slowly, don’t run.
