Itinerary description
Yea, that's the name we made up for this hike. There are tons of switchbacks as you head up and there are a dozen or more false peaks. I wasn't expecting a full out climb and our start was shaky too.
The last turn onto the final road there are two lanes to choose. Go for the left one. After parking your car and reading the information board do not go straight ahead. Back up five steps and look down to your right.
Not a popular trail, we saw nobody in 5 hours (3up including lunch and 2 hours to get down). It has some nice views. Path is apparent (except for the start) signage is sparse by New Zealand standards and someone actually did this trail on a bike! It would be torture on the way up and life threatening on the way down.
The hike is a small part of a larger trek that could have some very special scenery. Unfortunately we only had time enough to see the promise.
