NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
We have left Simon's Town and its impressive False Bay, which with its more than forty kilometers is the ideal place to see whales and white sharks. We would see the whales in this bay, but due to bad weather, we had to postpone the sighting of the great white shark in Gordon's Bay for a few days. Now we are staying in a Bed & Breakfast in the beautiful place of Knysna, after having stayed a few days in Hermanus. The environment of Knysna is occupied for the most part by an immense estuary that forms the tides and the strong waves of the Indian Ocean that bathe the coasts of this population. Keep in mind that the entire estuary is highly protected, and it is that in it, you can still find jewels in danger of extinction such as the seahorse. We have had to get up early, since from Knysna to the Tsitsikamma Natural Park we have about a hundred kilometers by car, along some roads that, as I already explained, are like something out of a movie, and not because they are poorly paved (those that are), but because layout, you have to unite the way of driving and the amount of "things" that one can find on the South African roads. Despite all this, it should be noted that in the many kilometers we did, both in the northern part of South Africa and along the entire coastal "Garden Route", we did not see a single accident or run over. Of course, among the small towns, we could see many broken old cars, which, however, the natives continue to fix in improvised "workshops" that can be seen on the very edge of the roads. Arriving at the entrance of the Tsitsikamma National Park the same ritual as always: barrier and guard at the entrance, who asks us for the tickets and writes down the license plate of the car, all this before raising the barrier. The weather is still quite choppy, and the damp cold of the South African winter has been joined by strong wind and rain, which makes an appearance from time to time. For this reason, we want to take advantage of daylight hours, which are not very generous at these latitudes either. To do this, as soon as we reach the parking lot at the end of the road and after a few kilometers from the entrance, we take out our backpacks and raincoats and head northeast to do the Suspension Bridge Trail. It is a round trip of about three kilometers along a wooden walkway, which runs all the time between dense vegetation and parallel to a raging Indian Ocean. The gap to overcome is not exhausting at all, although some tourists ask us on the way back "if there is much left", and part of it is saved by steps, also made of wood. During the tour, a couple of viewpoints and almost at the beginning a movie bend, with a kind of cave and a small waterfall. At the end we reach a beautiful and very narrow gorge on the left, through which we saw how a group of canoes entered, while opposite the most striking are the two suspension bridges, as well as wooden ones that cross said gorge to reach a small bowling alley. And I say well: "boules" of all sizes and colors that surely due to the effect of the continuous waves are perfectly polished and rounded. As this time respected the weather, we took advantage of it to sit on the bowling alley beach and thus enjoy a time of contemplation and discussion. For the return, there is no other option than to retrace what we have walked exactly in the same place, although now going downhill.
