Itinerary description
The location of the trail head is within the Cleveland National Forest which requires an adventure pass for parking. Fortunately there is now a vending machine to purchase a day pass across the road from the trailhead for those that forget to buy one in advance. These trails are some of my favorites in the area. This hike is moderate in intensity mostly due to the length. The elevation change was due to a lot of rolling hills, but there were no extremely steep or challenging trails. The trail head is near mile marker 19.1 on the sunrise highway. If you have a copy of afoot and afield in San Diego County, this hike involved trails part of trip 9 and 10 of section M-8 in the Laguna Mountains. The weather was epic this memorial day 2022. Generally this is a wonderful time of year to hike in the area. Although some types of flowers have already finished blooming, others are still blooming nicely. The trail surface is mostly smooth and in good shape, with some rockier portions, and there is a mixture of shade and sunshine. Many miles of trails exist in this area, so plan accordingly. One could hike 3 or 20 miles in the area in a single day depending on what you want to do.
