Itinerary description
This is a great starting point to explore the dunes of Erg Chebbi by yourself on foot. This post is all about the starting point. Once you are there, you can exlore the dunes on your own -- there is no need to follow the GPS track. You can drive right up to the dunes in a regular car (no need for a 4x4, but drive carefully). There are no houses and very few people around, only the occasional group with camels leaving before sunset.
The starting point is on the road from Rissani to Taouz, 4km after the turn-off to Merzouga. Coming from Merzouga: turn left onto the road to Taouz and pass the automobile museum (after about 3.5 km). Shortly after that, opposite a mosque on your right hand side, look for a place where you can safely drive off the road towards the dunes.
This spot is especially recommendable for a sunset walk, because you have the setting sun in your back and the whole of Erg Chebbi in front of you. At a distance you can observe the camel tours trotting up and down the dunes headed for their overnight bivouacs.
