Itinerary description
This walk starts from thr Sun Inn on the B6451 from Otley to Dacre, just south of the A59.
We parked on the road side next to the pub, where there is room for about 4 cars. From here cross the road and take the footpath towards Swinsty Reservoir. It is clearly marked, After crossing three fields the path enters a wood where the path was a bit muddy on the day we walked. When the path meets Smithson's Lane turn left and after about 100 metres turn right onto a narrow lane.
After three fields turn left onto a footpath to Bland Hill on the B6451. Turn right and then left at the corner. After a short distance take a footpath to the left leading towards Watson's Lane. Here turn right, walk along the road a short distance taking the second footpath on the left towards Haverah Park and the site of John O' Gaunts Castle, a hunting lodge dating back to 1400. Unfortunately, the site is now in private hands and access to the site has been closed.
From here we walked around the end of Beaver Dyke Reservoir and turned left onto the Dalesway Link footpath which links Harrogate with Ilkley. The path follows a medieval earthwork called Bank Slack for a while before returning to the Sun Inn.
This is a lovely walk with long distance views over the dales.
