Itinerary description

From the top of Penang Hill follow Summit Road to locate the trail head. The trail winds it's way down Penang Hill to Bottom Station first following the old Moniot Road which is now being cleared to encourage more hikers into the area. A small bridge is out so you have to climb down one side and up the other to make the crossing. The Moniot Road Trail meets up with a concrete paved road which runs east to west. Continue the descent until locating what is known informally as the Chili Trail. There are yellow arrow markers along the trail so if you keep to those you should have no problem getting to the bottom. There are many junctions along the trail which lead to small holder farms. Generally there is no trespassers allowed. There are a number of farms on the way down BUT do not wonder into the gardens as this upsets local farmers. The trail is a concrete path which allows motorcycles as well as pedestrians so be aware. Along the way there are magnificent city views including views of Kek Lok Si (http://kekloksitemple.com/) the largest Buddhist temple in South-East Asia. Along the way you will pass the Prosperity Temple where you can get boiled water and possibly an inexpensive cup of coffee if there is someone in attendance. At one point you can view the backside of the Mon Sejour. To view from the front see (see http://penang.forestexplorers.com/penanghill/monsejour.shtml). Off to the north you can get an excellent view of Bukit Cendana which rises to 525m. Once you reach the housing area at the bottom, there may be a short cut to Bottom Station so that would lessen the total distance taken on this hike.
