Itinerary description
It is the summit night.
Most of the groups wake up at 22h00 and start there ascent at 23h00 or wake up at 23h00 and start walking at 24h00.
Our guide, Hazem, decided to start a bit later. He thinks we are fit for the peak and we will be a bit faster than the others.
So at 1 am we left Barafu Camp and started our slow ascent.
Snow was covering the mountain and it was freezing cold (-15 degrees)
At 4750 m we passed by Kosovo Campsite.
The ascent was hard and very demanding. We started to encounter people who are giving up and returning to camp. Between 2 am and 5 am it was the hardest part. Very steep slope and you have to resist cold and the need to sleep.
After 4 km and at the elevation of 5756 m we finally reached "Stella Point"
From there the trail is easier to get to Uhuru peak. We can see the first daylight in the horizon, beautiful colors and awesome view over the crater and the glaciers.
After 1.3 km We are at the highest point in Africa: The Uhuru Peak 5895 m.
The feeling is undescribable. You forget about the cold and the fatigue and I felt very overwhelmed. It was a very emotional moment, we took some pics, watched the sunrise and directly started our ascent.
Going back was very fast but not easy with all the pressure on your knees and toes.
Once we are at Barafu Camp, we ate and got some rest.
After that, we took our staff and continued downhill till we reached back the vegetation and got to Mweka Camp for the night at 3050 m of elevation.
