Itinerary description

I did this walk today to check out part of a route for a Sunday hike with family members on Sunday next. I needed to connect between the Summit Inn and the Ben of Howth and then go on to the Bog of Frogs. I walked down Windgate Rise and turned left into Windgate Road. I missed the first gap on the left which is the shortest route to the Ben of Howth, but I took the second, which leads you to the Ben but it is a longer walk. (So note that there is an entrance near a Red House which is shorter). From the Ben, which is the highest point on Howth Hill, I walked down to the most commonly used route turned left at the first junction and continued until I came to a house. Beside this house there is a somewhat overgrown pathway to the right which brings you to a T junction where I turned left. Then about 100 meters along this path, I turned right and walked on to the Bog of Frogs. Here there is a lovely Fairy Door at the foot of one of the trees and a Teddy tucked in beside the door. People leave pennies (cents) for the fairies. From there to Aideen’s Grave part of the pathway is not clearly distinguishable. There are steps to take you down a steep hill. From Aideen’s Grave I walked back to the Deerpark Hotel, and down the road. On this road you pass the Howth Castle (private grounds) and the National Transport Museum. Through the Main gates you arrive on the road to Howth first passing St Mary’s Church and on to the Railway Station. I used the 31 Bus from Dublin City to the Summit for the start and took the DART Train back to the City. This is a lovely walk, it has some mildly challenging parts, but suitable for most walkers and family members. Parts are not suitable for the Mobility Challenged. This route can be combined with other Howth routes I have posted on Wikiloc.
Aideen's grave: Folklore tells us that this is the burial place of Aideen the wife of Oscar who was the son of Oisin. In his first battle Oscar, a brave Fianna warrior killed three Kings, but he himself was killed in the battle of Gabhra. They say that Aideen died in grief. Her father-in-law Oisin, buried her in Howth and put this cairn or tomb to mark her grave. This was a rare act, as such tombs were usually only built for proven warriors and kings.
The Bog of Frogs is a very damp area which does attract many frogs in the wet seasons.
