Itinerary description
A "quick" hike on the famous Fimmvörðuháls trail between Skogar and Básar í Goðaland. A lot of people do this in two days, however, we opted to do it in one go since it was only a bit more than 20 km and because we wanted to catch the "sunrise" when descending into Þórsmörk.
Generally a very easy trail, except that the descent at the end can be a bit tricky as the trail follows down a rather steep and at times very narrow ridgeline. Certainly not for those people which are afraid of heights, and personally I wish I had been a bit less tired at that point. However, arriving in Þórsmörk was beautiful as always with the sun lighting up many shades of green and casting fascinating shadows all over the mountains. You will know why people in Iceland believe in stories of Elves and Trolls once you experience this play of light and shadows along the ridgelines in the early hours of dawn.
