Itinerary description

This approach to these two peaks uses the parking area at the gate several miles up the Caribou Pond Road (nearly directly across from the Transfer Station) as the trail head. Park here, and walk about 1/2 mile beyond the gate to the AT. Turning right takes you to the Crockers, left to Spaulding and Sugarloaf. I prefer this approach via the AT over the ski trails on Sugarloaf, mainly because of the great views of the glacial cirque on the right as you ascend. It does have some puck-points, however, especially on the descent! Once on the ridge, I turned right and did Spaulding first. If you follow the spur trail a bit beyond the summit there's a good view of Sugarloaf. On the return I did Sugarloaf. Saw several spruce grouse on this hike, and a pair of moose in a romantic mood on the road at the start. Lots of snorting/crashing about in what must pass as a "good time" in Mooseland a few minutes after they left the road.
