Itinerary description
This is a very pleasant, fun trail with excellent areas of delicious pine infused scents along with plenty of flora & fauna to keep nature watchers enthralled.
The first 2.9 miles, from the boat ramp to the end of Giant Gap Campground, are ADA accessible paved trail. The rest of the loop is natural well-trod forest trail.
At approx mi 3.8 to 3.9, there is one “sketchy” area of trail over slick, sharp, steep rock that might require some to use their “5th appendage” (aka their butt). Then again, others might “bound thru” the area like mountain goats and not give it a second thought! We got across this short stretch with our trekking poles and slow deliberate movements.
Around mi 3.9 to 4.0 finds you back on pavement as you cross the dam. Then you’re back on forest trail to the end of the hike back to the boat ramp.
There are many areas where you could pull off the trail for a picnic as you circle the lake. Both the boat ramp and the day use areas (mi 2.3 to 2.4) offer randomly placed picnic tables. You’ll also find restrooms, potable water, and excellent swimming access at both these locations.
