Itinerary description
Trail starts at Casa da Montanha at the feet of the mountain. Here you'll be given a debriefing and a GPS tracker for each person.
It's recommended to make a reservation, but we found that if you arrive early in the day you can get a free spot.
There are 3 main slots to try the climb.
2am, 7am or 6pm.
We did the 7am because we didn't have a guide with us, which is strongly recommended if you're doing it at night.
There are 47 poles showing the way and you can see them relatively easy during the day, but we did pass a few people that couldn't find their way up in daylight.
It's a tough climb full of different kinds of terrain. From smooth lava, loose gravel and sharp and uneven rock. Several times we had to use our hands to cross an obstacle or backtrack a bit, because you went of trail. Nothing major, but be prepared.
We're both speed demons when trail hiking so hour total time was around 5hours, but the usual is 7 to 9.
Walking sticks are mandatory for these kinds of trail in my experience. Used correctly you'll be faster and less fatigued by the end of it.
You will see people of all ages doing the trek. So a bit slower anyone can do it.
