Itinerary description
From Strútsskáli to Álftavötn hut
About 6 km to Strútslaug where the glacial river has to be crossed. Sometimes difficult to cross. Turn to the eastern hillside after crossing as soon as possible, because the flat ground gets more and more wet the more you go south. Hike east along Svarthnúkur. There are several possibilities. I prefer to succeed very close to the Svarthnúkur basis. You will find a very nice waterfall. After that keep hiking east. About 15 min later you get a wonderful view of a wide valley, called Álftavatnskrókur.
It is not the usual track to Álftavötn. You can avoid fording two bigger rivers if you hold to south-east and cross the Álftavatnskrókur in a southern turn. Then you have to cross only one small shallow river. The Álftavatnskrókur is a wide flat basin shortly before Álftavötn-hut.
