Itinerary description
Physical difficulty: 3.5/5
Note #1: The trails in Slovakia are color-coded (Blue, Green, Red, Yellow). Use the app Trail Tatras (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.mgaczkowski.tatry) which is great to see and plan your routes in advance.
Note #2: Some parts of the trail are "flooded" by micro-creeks, so waterproof shoes are recommend, but not essential.
Note #3: On a sunny day this is a busy trail with lots of hikers. If you want to enjoy nature without the people, start very early - 5 or 6 am.
This is a long and physically demanding trail starting at Štrbské pleso, through Mlynická dolina (eng. valley), all the way up through a mountain pass Bystrá lávka, and then back down on the other side, through Furkotská dolina, and finally to Štrbské pleso again.
The nature is beautiful. You'll be passing through lush evergreen forests, beside numerous mountain lakes and rivers surrounded by amazing peaks, but the terrain can be demanding even of experienced hikers. The ascents are steep, and the descents even steeper. Can be hard on the leg muscles and the knees (if you have problems with them).
Plan a whole day for this trip, bring lots of water, and some protein-rich food.
Waypoints
Štrbske pleso
Park somewhere around the many parking lots in Štrbské pleso. Most are metered, and when we were here a 24hr ticket was €7.
'Pond' under the Skok waterfall
This wider stretch of the river is not really a pond, but it has a tiny "beach" and it's great to take a rest; kids will love it too.
Skok waterfall crossing
You'll need to use chains to help yourself in this part of the trail.
Memorial site
A site commemorating the tragic accident where 7 people died during a helicopter rescue mission, in 1979. Also the beginning of a step ascent towards the Bystra Lavka mountain pass.
Mid-point - ascent to Bystrá Lavká
A view of the lakes: left - Okrúhle pleso, right - Capie pleso.
High-point - ascent to Bystrá Lávka
To pull yourself up to the mountain pass and across, you'll need to use chains. Some technical expertise required.
Bystrá Lávka (mountain pass)
Mountain pass, from here on the trail back to Štrbské pleso begins. The lake seen in the photo is Vyšné Wahlenbergovo pleso.
