Itinerary description
This is a great walk through the forest on the south shore of Cowichan Lake. The route takes you on many types of road and trails with low elevation changes. Pay attention to the map intersections—you are not on a single trail, path or road. Most of the trails are easy walking but others are overgrown and require attention to footing and trail direction There are some feature spots and big trees and stumps as well as access to the Cowichan Forest educational center which requires use of neglected trails of the small upper loop (this can be omitted for a shorter easier hike). This map shows that we turned back to work our way down to a beach and a shoreline exit trail, but it is quite steep, overgrown and swampy to descend that way (though it is a trail). Most hikers will simply want to hike onward into the public campground and their starting point in Point Ideal.

666 ft
Alternate way down difficult, but goes to a beach and a shoreline return path
Not recommended: This descends very steeply and almost vertically to the lake. It is overgrown with hidden footing over swampy hillside the whole way down.
