Itinerary description
Kazbegi National Park
Going up via the classical route and down via an alternative trail. I recommend doing the alternative trail first (unlike I did) as even though it's harder, it grants constant views over Mount Kazbeg and the gorge.
I saw that most trail recordings turn around at the 1st lookout point, but then you miss the best part. Reaching the glacier and seeing the waterfall on one side and Mount Kazbeg majestically rising up right in front of you is nothing short of magical.
This can be done in one day (I left at noon), or you can stay in the Altihut or camp right next to it. It has steep parts going up, logically, but it's alternated with relatively flat stretches granting some relief. The trail surface is easy to walk on, not too rocky or uneven. It's impossible to lose the trail, as it's an extremely popular beaten track.
All water sources are marked, only being available in lower elevations close to the town or at the Altihut.
There's no shade on this route. Be aware of sheep flocks, as they're guarded by shepherd dogs.

We loved the alternative route for the return - it was way easier on the way down for the knees, different landscape and just overall great trail! It took us 8h45m to finish!
