Itinerary description
This loop begins and ends at the paradyskloof forest. It follows the established jeep tracks around the Dylan Lewis Sculpture garden to a second plantation before diverting left from the jeep track to a single hiking track. Shortly after this intersection the trail ascends steeply and eventually reaches a col/neck. Here one can head down to Assegaibosch on the Jonkershoek side of the mountain (east side) or one can turn left and summit the Stellenboschberg peak, there is a sub northern summit on route down to Coetzenberg, thereafter it's a long gradual way down with a few steep sections before arriving at Second cross, thereafter the path heads down towards the universities stadia before splitting off to another contour which heads back to the start point. Overall a good challenge with amazing vista's over Stellenbosch, Jonkershoek and out to Cape Town and false bay. There are very few exposed sections on this trail so while steep at times this will not be too much for those with a reasonable fear of heights. That said the exception being at the summit near the first trig beacon the drop down to the Jonkershoek Valley is a sheer cliff so take care at the very top. The trail can be done in reverse just note that it will be a very long slog up with many false summits that may test you, but this is an option. Overall a very enjoyable scenic route with interesting landscapes and an amazing variety of different wildflowers. One last note regarding security as we arrived there was a car at the parking lot which had its rear window smashed so please do not leave anything in your vehicle that may tempt criminals. Although I haven't personally heard of incedents the potential may exist for mugging at the start or end of your trail so take the necessary precautions like leaving valuables at home and walking in a group. That being said it's a reality all over South Africa but the odds are in one's favour so do not let that deter you from attempting the trail.

This was a beast of a trail. but totally worth it if you want to advance your hiking skills.
So true :) , thanks Sascha 👌
I've done the standard route up from Coetzenberg and back down again but it is long and there are a lot of false peaks. This will be a better way up steep and then gradually down.
