Itinerary description
From the lovely situated village of Steinbach this walk leads you through the woods to the the Dreiherrenstein at the top of the Grosser Weissenberg, a historic landmark at an altitude of 740m.
For centuries this stone marked the borders of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha as well as the Electorate of Hesse. Even today, the Dreiherrenstein forms a border point: Here the counties Gotha (with the district Winterstein), the district Schmalkalden-Meiningen (with the district Brotterode) and the Wartburgkreis (with the district Steinbach) meet.
From here on the track becomes very beautiful and will lead you along fantastic rock/boulder formations along a wonderful track to the Gerberstein, one of the highest mountains in this region, the top of which, a granite formation at 728,5m., overlooks the Werratal and the Rhön.
After a short and steep descent you will arrive at the Rennsteig Portal on the L1027 and then descend through the woods following very nice tracks giving you some good views.
After passing the Luther Denkmal on this Lutherweg you will reach the stream Kallenbach which you will follow to the picturesque village of Steinbach.
