Itinerary description
A small part of the history from one of the first settlements in Santiago: São Domingos, can be discovered through this trail that initiates in the Várzea’s church, next to the police station. From there, it moves westward to one of the main roads, and it then quickly moves towards a narrow track commonly used by the population and that gives access to an old community laundry and to many terraces of subsistence agriculture. On the fertile soils and with abundant water between João Garrido and Lagoa you may find several flora and fauna species. The trail then moves through a steep climb to the road that connects Rui Vaz to São Domingos. In the end, the viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the landscape and enables its visitors to contemplate the Gémeos da Caiada Hill, natural heritage, whose configuration resembles the image of two twin sisters. From this Hill it is possible to contemplate a panoramic view of the São Domingos valley. The downhill to Água de Gato, considered the lung of São Domingos, is crossed by the main road. After crossing this village, passing by the chapel of Imaculada Coração de Maria, the trail follows through a pleasant track to the city of São Domingos. On arrival, the building of the City Hall stands out with a modern architecture, the church of São Nicolau Tolentino, the Municipal Market where you can buy the traditional Pastéis de São Domingos and, at last, the Craftsmanship Centre responsible for the production, collection and trading of several handicraf items.
