This route seems to usually be described in the opposite direction. The direction I describe has the advantage that the ascent is a bit gentler. The views are very good, although the smog significantly impaired them when I did this hike in December 2016. I was driven to the start, and I don't know about public transportation options to get there. But I took a bus (52B) from the ending point to the Fanling MTR. The ending point is a small settlement with an organic farm; it's worth exploring.
You can take minibus 20C at minibus terminal where is next to Tai Po Market MTR to the starting point Tai Mei Tuk.
