Itinerary description
Zutphen is an historic city well worth exploring. It is located along the IJssel river as well as the Berkel river in the province of Gelderland. Being one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands (founded in 1194 !), it has a rich (trading) history.
Strolling through the centre you can see many traces of this history: for one, the circular fortifications around the very centre, but also the churches and stately warehouses, as well as the gabled merchant homes, many of them beautifully decorated.
Lots to see and admire, in other words!
We chose to have a look at the many inner courtyards that Zutphen (and other historic cities like Leiden) offer, often they are an oasis of peace right within the city.
The tip is to park your car on the Houtwal car park, an easy 5 minute walk from the historic centre. See photo and info.
