Ella Rock Hike:
Overview
Distance: 12 km return (depending on where you start )

Difficulty: Moderate.
Ella Rock sits high on the hills, just 2.5 kilometers above Ella Town. Its close proximity to town makes it a perfect hike for those staying in Ella. However, finding the trail up to Ella Rock can be tricky, so don’t worry if you get lost along the way.
This trail GPX will be of assistance.
Route Details
Depart from Ella Town: Start from Ella Town, and your first waypoint will be the train station. Depending on where you’re staying, the station might be just around the corner. Alternatively, you can take a drive / rickshaw to Kithalella train station and start your walk there. In this trail, we passed by that area.
Walk Along the Railroad Tracks: From the Ella railway station, turn left and walk along the train tracks heading south. The tracks will lead you through picturesque landscapes.
Enter the Eucalyptus Forest: After about 1.5 km along the tracks, you’ll reach a eucalyptus forest. Follow the path into the forest.
Trailhead Below the Viewpoint: There isn’t a single hiking route to Ella Rock; there are several tracks and ways to reach the forest trailhead below the viewpoint. For this guide, I’ll outline the route I took.
Steep Section: The last section of the hike is quite steep, but if you have a general level of fitness, you’ll manage it without any issues.
Ella Rock Viewpoint: Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with excellent views over the Baddula valleys and the Sri Lankan highlands.
Tips:
Start Early: Begin your hike early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds.
Bring Water and Snacks: Carry enough water and some snacks for the journey.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: Sturdy footwear is essential for the rocky terrain.
Respect the Environment: Leave no trace and respect the natural surroundings.
