Itinerary description

It's been six years since I walked Savage Gulf. This time I spent two and a half days on the east side. Started out mid-day at Collins West on the Collins Gulf Trail. Made stops at Suter Falls and Horsepound falls. Headed down into the gulf to spend the night at Saw Mill Campsite. Along the way I stopped at Schwoon Spring to water up. The spring is always an interesting visit. The spring comes from a small cave and there are a great jumble of boulders at its mouth. While traversing these big rocks, my knife fell free. Now there is an Outdoor Edge Onyx 3.0 deep in a crevice. Overnight I listened to the owls and coyotes nearby. Started my next morning with a most arduous task. The Connector Trail up to Hobbs Cabin is a rocky purgatory. I had forgotten about this level of difficulty. Reaching the cabin by late morning, I realized that I was going to be hard pressed to reach Stage Road Campsite. The North Rim and South Rim trails are really nice but long. Even with a very brief stop at Savage Falls, I was wore down and darkness was upon me before I reached Stage Road. Now that I fell short of my destination the previous evening the last morning looked long. I typically plan on a short morning hike out at the end of the trek. Not so this last day. Ten miles put me out mid-afternoon. Not a bad deal though. On the ride home I had dinner instead of lunch. Regardless of setbacks this was a great revisit.
