Itinerary description
Physical difficulty: 3.5/5
Note #1: Intersection #25 was a wrong turn, ignore it. Read the waypoint descriptions for more info.
Note #2: The changing weather can surprise you, especially in the autumn/winter months. Bring layered clothing as the temperature can differ 5 or more degrees C between peaks, even though they're all roughly at the same elevation.
Note #3: The constant ups and downs, combined with the length of the trail (25km) can be very demanding on weekend hikers. Comfortable footwear is a must!
--
This is a long, technically easy, but physically pretty demanding circular trail connecting 3 peaks in the Žumberak hills.
The trail starts at the village of Sošice. The first and longest continual ascent is to the Sv. Gera peak, bordering with Slovenia. Another series of ups and downs through hills will take you to the Pliješ peak, which doesn't have a view. From there, another series of ups and downs will take you to Ječmište, which does have a limited view, but nothing noteworthy.
The terrain is a combination of well-marked paths through forests, over hills, or meadows. No rocky or craggy terrain. No special equipment needed.
The trail can be cut by about 1/3 if you skip Ječmište, and return straight to Sošice instead at intersection #21.
Waypoints
Parking
Free parking on the side of the road is available near this chapel; marked and proper parking spots are also available in the center of the village (also free).
Intersection #10
Go left towards Sv. Gera/Trdinov vrh; on the way back you will continue straight and down towards Pliješ.
Sv. Gera/Trdinov vrh (1178m)
Summit has a geodetic marker (stone pillar), next to the very small mountain hut. Further down the road there are two churches, a picnic area, and a broadcasting antenna installation. The peak is split between Croatia and Slovenia.
Intersection #13
On your way back, you can take the exact same (shorter route), or you can go on the carriage road which will roughly take you to intersection #10, but it's longer.
State border Croatia-Slovenia
From this point on you will be briefly crossing into Slovenia.
Intersection #21
On your way to Ječmište, go straight through the field. On your way back, you will take the carriage road right to return to Sošice (starting point).
Ječmište (976m)
Ječmište will offer a limited view on a clear day. From here, you'll take the same way back towards Intersection #21.
Mountain lodge 'Vodice'
Mountain lodge is open on the weekends, but to make any arrangements in regard to food and drinks, you have to announce yourself in advance.
Intersection #25 - WRONG TURN
WRONG TURN! Ignore this path, the real intersection is a dozen meters down the main road (to the right).
Intersection #26
Take a right, towards Sošice. You'll be cutting through the main carriage road a few times on your way down.
Intersection #30
Go left, towards the center of Sošice.
