Itinerary description

Somerset trail with Piccabeen walk, Mount Mee, D’Aguilar National Park.

Entering through Dayboro, the drive to the walk is stunning with great views. Ample parking even on a Sunday. The trail head is a little hard to find.

Lovely walk and a good distance that feels doable but is also achievement. 13km for the Somerset Trail, and an additional 1km for the Piccabeen Walk to finish off the day and cool down. We went anticlockwise, so had the lookout at 7km, and 6km return (on different path).

Starts off in temperate rainforest, and climbs into schlerrophyll forest. There are occasional pine stands, then into some nice gum forests of grass trees, yellow parrot pea and Scribbly barks. About half way you reach the look outs... there’s plenty of places to look out from so easy to find somewhere private. From here you can see out over Somerset Dam and Wivenhoe Dam.

There’s been a lot of select logging here in the past, and you can see the remnant stumps. The bush had come back quite well but doesn’t have the “untouched feel”. It does make up for it in the changing landscapes, length, and lack of people (we only crossed paths with 6 or so people in 4 hours.)

A couple of moderately steep sections. Track is good, no a bit of erosion in parts, Blow flies, mossies, in parts. The Somerset Lookout is magical

I good walk through a few types of foliage. Around 14 kms all up. Best done anti clockwise.
