BOYANA CHURCH- VITOSHA BEECH-DRAGALEVTSI MONASTERY
(Vitosha Mountain, Boyana, Sofia, Bulgaria)
(Sunday, August 7, 2022)
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
This route begins with a visit to the medieval Orthodox church (10th century) located on the outskirts of Sofia and on the threshold of the Vitosha Mountain Nature Park, the oldest natural park on the Balkan Peninsula. The silhouette of the mountain is a landmark of the city and a favorite place for tresc of the people of the region. A spectacular route, through an endless young beech forest; a beech forest with a waterfall, a small lake and a very attractive end, the monastery of Dragalevtsi (or Dragalevski). Highly recommended route and well done.

Not all photos shown are chosen for their quality or spectacularity. The selection is arranged, above all, with the aim of facilitating the interpretation of the reference points ("waypoints") and, save often scant signage at forks and crossings, help to continue on the "good way"!
➡️ Tresc start and end point: Boyana Church - Dragalevtsi Monastery (Vitosha Mountain, Sofia, Bulgaria)
The starting point is the Boyana Orthodox Church (accessible by public transport or taxi from the center of Sofia). The end of the tour is at the Dragalevtsi Monastery (also easily accessible for the return to the city center).
➡️ Difficulty of the route
This route does not present any technical difficulties to be considered. Well-trodden paths and excellent state of conservation. The GPS-Wikiloc track will be quite useful, since most of the vertical signs are written in Cyrillic.

Today we enjoyed the trail: the 12 components of the Bonviure Trek trekking group.
➡️ Route signage
The signposting of the route is excellent, but it is advisable to use the GPS at the forks and alternative paths, as the signposting is mainly in the Cyrillic alphabet. It should also be borne in mind that this route is of a particular design (it is not one of the standard routes of the natural park).
➡️ Itinerary
Boyana Orthodox Church - Entrance to Vitosha Nature Park - Boyana Waterfall - Boyana Lake - Dragalevtsi Monastery
➡️ SECTION 1 - (km 00 - 4.2)
Boyana Orthodox Church - Entrance to Vitosha Natural Park - Boyana Waterfall
From the church you have to walk through the streets in the direction of Vitosha mountain. The entrance to the natural park is very well signposted. You walk uphill through a relatively young and leafy beech forest on very well-trodden paths and without any difficulty. Very popular route, especially on weekends. The beech forest will accompany us the whole way, a shady and spectacular way. The waterfall is one of the favorite places of urban walkers in Sofia.
➡️ SECTION 2 - (km 4.2 - 10.58)
Boyana Waterfall - Boyana Lake - Dragalevtsi Monastery
From the waterfall we will have to undo part of the path that was made during the ascent. Then it will be left to arrive, downhill, at Lake Boyana; a place to stop and have a bite. From the lake, continuing through the beech forest, we head to the Dragalevtsi monastery. The trail is now flatter and will take us to a picnic area, about 200 m before the monastery; place to have a table meal and then proceed to visit the monastery. Dragalevtsi is a monastery steeped in history and the flame of the country's struggle for independence. The national hero Vasil Levski sometimes hid there. It deserves a slow and respectful stop.
Cheers and good morning,

Le début est dur car c'est la montée de la montagne mais après c'est du plat et cela se fait très facilement
Je n'avais jamais fait de randonnée en montagne avant et honnêtement ce parcours se fait assez aisément
