Snow Chain of Ponds, Maine 8/27/2015

The track shown here is from the paved highway, Maine Route 27. Traveling north, turn left onto North Road - my Garmin nuvi vehicle GPS showed it as Round Mtn Road. Here are some key points of that write-up:
"Trailhead: North Road, Eustis (off Route 27 approximately 10 miles north of Cathedral Pines Campground). Take left onto North Road, and then right at the "T" intersection. Cross bridge. At 2.8 miles bear left and cross bridge. Pass Sports Camp Road on the left, cross bridge and bear right. Parking lot is at the end of the road (just under 5 miles from the 27/North Road intersection)."

Of the hike itself -
"From the COP parking lot:
Start at the ATV trail (signs, rock)
Cross 3 ATV bridges
After the 3rd bridge, trail immediately swings right
The trail then curves to the left. Go straight - over a berm and rocks (a yellow arrow sign and "North Road" sign are at this junction)
Follow the streambed path up for a short way
ATV path leaves the streambed on the right, take that path
Enter a four-way intersection (there's a bridge off to the left)
Go straight at this intersection
Look for the broken yellow sign (part on ground, part on tree) and herd path on the right. Follow the herd path.
Herd path ends at a logging road
Go left on the logging road, up gradually and then steeply to the top of a rise. Small cairn on right indicating a herd path. Take that herd path.
This herd path eventually comes to a T-intersection with a second herd path. Go right, on the herd path to the summit."

The herd path mentioned above is very obvious, especially on the descent. It appears that it is more used than the route described in detail here, and is the route I used several years ago to Snow COP from the Tim Pond Road approach.

Finally - on our way back to Maine Route 27 we met and talked with a Penobscot Ranger. It was great to learn that the Penobscot Nation regularly monitors and patrols their lands.
