SNL3 | Ribeira Prata - Tarrafal

More than a connecting trail, this sector joins Ribeira Prata and Tarrafal to the Main Trail and manages to cross the entire Island, coast to coast. The trail begins at the entrance of Ribeira Prata, following the path that reaches Ribeira da Fragata and climbing to its summit. Along the way, it’s mandatory to look back at the valley in all its splendour. After passing the village of Fragata you’ll come to an intersection with the Main Trail, moving along the path until reaching a signal indicating the beginning of the hike to Tope Matin. Here you’ll reach the highest point of the trail and you’ll be able to glimpse both the Valley of Ribeira de Calhaus and green agricultural fields. To reach this point you must move down to Ribeira de Calhaus where you will then start to climb along volcanic ash and towards the village of Hortelão. The descent from Hortelão is made through a pier where it’s possible to catch a first glimpse of Tarrafal and the sea below. The climb down to Tarrafal is through an escarpment with one of the best views of the region. This trail ends in front of the Fishing Museum, in Tarrafal.

Este percurso de ligação é mais do que isso, é um percurso que liga a Ribeira Prata e oTarrafal ao Percurso Principal, sendo feito na sua totalidade pode atravessar-se a ilha de costa-a-costa. O percurso inicia-se à entrada de Ribeira Prata junto às antenas de telecomunicações. O cume é o limite e é até lá que é necessário ir seguindo pelo caminho que sobe ao longo da Ribeira de Fragata. Ao longo do caminho é obrigatório olhar para trás para observar todo o esplendor deste vale que rasga as rochas até ao mar. Depois de se passar a aldeia de Fragata chega-se à intersecção com o Percurso Principal e segue-se por ele durante algum tempo até a sinalética nos indicar que se deve continuar a subir até ao colo de Tope Matin. Aqui chega-se ao ponto mais alto do percurso e deslumbra-se o vale de Ribeira de Calhaus à frente e os seus campos agrícolas. Mas para lá chegar é preciso descer. A partir da Ribeira de Calhaus inicia-se a subida ao longo de cinzas vulcânicas que nos levam até à aldeia de Hortelã. De Hortelã a descida é realizada ao longo do Espigão, a descida até ao Tarrafal é feita através de uma escarpa que permite ter umas das melhores vistas do Tarrafal. O percurso termina no Tarrafal em frente ao Museu da Pesca, um local de visita obrigatória.
