Itinerary description

Slievemore, Achill Island, Ireland (Hewitt and Marilyn).
I’m keeping these summaries short as I’m on a two month tour of Ireland and there’s a lot of hills to hike and therefore lots of entries. All mapping used are view ranger digital OS 1:50 or 1:25. You will get the best results by uploading my wikiloc gpx giles into this mapping software.
Achill Island is a paradise and a lumpy one at that and Slievemore rises like a sharks fin from sea level to 672m. I wanted to do this from Dooagh as there is an obvious dramatic looped route to do that also takes in Croaghaun. However on the day the visibility was not good so I chose the easier back end of it and this would also give me the chance to see the deserted famine village, which was pretty cool! Anyway I parked at the famine village (very interesting, historical and quite a lot of it) and then headed directly north steeply uphill. After coming out of the deserted village it is all pretty tussocky and very steep. There are no paths until you get way into the ridge-line really after about 1.5kms. Once on the ridge-line you hang a right for another 1.5kms. By now I was way in the clouds and it was wet and windy. Do be cautious if your nav is not good as there are cliffs about though you need to be way off track. Anyway eventually you end up on a gently rising plateau and the trig point is on the far end of it. Here you should have views to die for but I saw sod all and came straight back down the same way more or less. Within an hour of coming down the clouds parted....ohhh well such is life.
The hike, 6.4kms with 680m of ascent done in 2hrs 51mins with a breakfast break.
