Itinerary description
An adventurous route through the Mournes with a challenging scree climb and the chance to explore a couple of caves.
From the Carrick Little car park we headed up the Annalong Valley track and arrived near the entrance to the cave in Lower Cove. Usually the lads are keen to climb up through the cave to squeeze through onto the hillside behind, but today lethargy had set in and we headed on round to below Slieve Beg.
The Devil's Coachroad is a slippery scree slope which climbs steeply up through a cleft in the cliffs below Beg. Near the top there's a choice of route - you see what looks to be the track climbing ahead of you (see photo), but I would recommend going left here and climbing the cleft which runs parallel 6 feet or so to the left. It's an easier route, even though just round the corner from where you turn there's a challenging step up to negotiate.
From the top of the coachroad we headed up Cove, and then Lamagan, with wonderful views all round. Then down the other side of Lamagan, turned left to pass by the Blue Lough and stopped to explore the cave in the rock formation known as Percy Bysshe.
I've marked this trail as difficult as the climb up the Devil's Coachroad is really quite tricky.
