Itinerary description
The Sli Chonamara trail is a 220km way-marked walking route that begins in
Galway City and winds its way out to Connemara taking in the villages of
An Spideal (Spiddal), Indreabhan (Inverin), An Cheathru Rua (Carraroe) and onto the Islands area of South Connemara. The trail continues through the hamlets of Camas, Ros Muc and onto Sraith Salach where it meets the larger
Western Way walking trail at Mam Ean. The route also goes further inland, north of Na Forbacha (Furbo) to Leitir and then presents hikers with the choice of traversing the forested region of the Cloosh Valley and alongside lakes onto Oughterard where it also connects to the Western Way just to the north. Simply follow the black posts with yellow man icon along. The signs are
oriented to be visible while walking the 'anticlockwise' direction, so
you-ll need to keep an extra eye out if walking the route in a 'clockwise' direction. Generally, it is offers a comfortable, easy walk on mostly rural roads and along beaches with where you can enjoy nice views of Galway Bay.
Further along the coast the route is often secluded, away from busy roads and areas of population density. The walk occasionally follows coastal paths and small quiet winding country roads in the Connemara Gaeltacht with stunning views of the Maamturk and 12 Bens Mountains, Aran Islands, varying seascapes and the unique surrounding countryside, such as coral beaches and undulating, rocky fields.
