Itinerary description
Slab Rock is a large outcropping of granite that you can easily walk up. It offers nice views of the Castle Peak Ridge as well as distant views. The road to the rock includes meadows and wild flowers, open and forest. Probably a side trip not a destination.
Slab Rock road is an easy to follow “4x4” road, tkn-j5, that deviates from the USGS map in that it does not turn West and end near a meadow, and the Open Cycle map in that it goes all the way to Slab Rock.
There are lots of ways to get to the Slab Rock trail head which starts at Donner Lake Rim Trail near the PCT.
I don’t know the condition of the roads leading the to the trail head, but there was a high clearance SUV with off road capable tires parked there. The access road from the Castle Peak exit is gated just after the pavement ends. I think the gate is open except when the snow is too deep.
There are presently a number of trees fallen across the road past the trail head blocking driving access and the road sometimes has wheel ruts deep enough that a high clearance vehicle is probably needed. The road gets steep enough that four wheel drive may be required. Don’t know if the trees will be removed.
No water or facilities on the road and no fees or signs banning any activity or animal.
