Itinerary description
Haleakala Summit (Red Hill) ` 10,000 feet, down to Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area campground ~6,200 feet. Upper slopes are bare lava and cinders. As the trail descends vegetation increases in abundance and size. On a clear day, you should see the Big Islands Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa but clouds and mist prevented me from seeing either the Big Island or even Maui's central valley. I finally did catch a glimpse of the West Maui Mountains sticking up through the clouds. It wasn't too cold. No jacket at the top and I zipped the legs off my pants on the way down.
