Itinerary description

Located on the western coast of Skagafjordur (18km North from Sauðárkrókur), this lovely and easy stroll take place between the grassy shores of Grettislaug (that got its name from the main character of one of Iceland’s most famous Sagas, Grettis Saga), much appreciated by the locals as a bathing spot with hot springs, and Glerhallavík, a small bay below high cliffs, which is also a protected nature area. In between, you'll walk along a little pond with many seabirds (Arctic terns, Eiders, Redshanks,...) and a further a nice fine black sandy beach where you can find green-flecked chalcedony pebbles that litter the soil.

It boasts splendid views of the surrounding Tindastoll mountains, the Skaga fjord, including of Drangey Island, and the opposite Tröllaskagi peninsula with its snowy tops.

Note that there is no really marked trail, just follow the sheep and horses footpaths nearby the sea and the cliffs.

In such a beautiful scenery, a jump into the hot spring pools after the walk might be healthy and relaxing. Enjoy it!
It is a private property, meaning you will have to pay a small charge to enter. There are changing facilities on site, and the water is approximately 40 degrees Celcius (102 degree Fahrenheit).
