Itinerary description
A nice walk up the hill north of Penha Longa toward the grounds of the Pena Palace, with the ultimate end point being the Santa Eufemia chapel and viewpoint. Then a different way down the hill through some fairly thick brush and forest paths.
The first part of the trail is a bit of an ascent, although nothing too taxing. The trail is mostly on shaded forest paths rather than open gravel roads, even though there are some of those, plus a bit of a stretch on a paved road next to the Pena Palace grounds. The chapel of Santa Eufemia has a number of picnic tables next to it, so it is a great spot to have a break with some lunch.
Also note that many of the forest paths are not maintained so they are quite overgrown now (August 2020). That is mostly fine but I would not advise anyone to wear shorts, as there are quite a lot of thorny branches.
Some of the waypoints are jumping from one path to another, including some wall climbs (easy ones). It would be possible to jump in to the Pena Palace grounds too (and pay when exiting close to Santa Eufemia), but this trail does not cross over into those grounds.
Would be easy if it were not for the first ascent, which can be a little strenuous, at least in the high summer.

Very pleasant trail. Did it with my dog. Right now, October '22 there are some heave machines opening paths in the forest, so unfortunately we lose touch with real trails little by little.
