Itinerary description
A nice hike along the coast from Praia das Maçãs to Cabo da Roca.
-- At a glance --
(1) It's difficult to evaluate the technical difficulty when you discover a new area. I would say that for regular people, especially if you are used to hike in real mountains with significant elevation gain, this itinerary is more a stroll. However, the descent to Praia Da Ursa is challenging as it requires a bit of climbing.
(2) The stairs ("Dinosaurs Steps") from the South end of Praia Grande are forbidden. More precisely it's a "restricted access" only for educational purposes. I do believe that it means risk is moderate. However we didn't climb them.
(3) I would suggest to take public transportation or a cab (10€) to come back from Cape Roca, otherwise you would need an additional 3h.
(4) The trail is easy to follow. Either at sight, or following the red/white signs.
(5) Hiking shoes are recommended, in particular for the descent to Praia Da Ursa.
-- Details --
[1] The trail starts from Praia Das Maças. There is a small river to cross [2] on the southern end of the beach. Stones are not slippery, even with the sand (I'm assuming you are not wearing flipflops). The trail soon arrives above Praia Grande [4] and the old Arribas Sintra Hotel that might have been grandiose in its times [5].
You can walk along the beach or on the beach [6] but dont go until the end of the beach unless you want to climb up the stairs [7]. Again, It does not seem dangerous, but it's forbidden.
[8] If you take the road, you will enjoy a short moment in the shade. You will pass the stairs [9], [10], [11]. Then on the way to Praia da Adraga [12], you divert from the top of the cliffs inland, passing through a pine fores [13]. This part is not really nice to be honest.
We were so in a rush to escape the parking next the beach [14] that we miss a probably nice path. However if you follow the road, very soon you will see the sign [15] to continue your journey on a dirt road, which takes you up again to the top of the cliffs.
[16], [17] There is a secluded beach that did not seem reachable to us.
[19], [20] The descent to Praia Da Ursa requires a bit of climbing. However you can avoid it by walking around the cliff and taking down the trail we took to come back from the beach.
[21] This beach is very nice.
[22] We wrongly followed a runner... but he was a climber. Far too difficult for us.
[23] The regular path to go up and down is far easier than the one we took to go down. Even if it's sort of equipped [24]
A few more meters and you will reach Cabo Da Roca [28]
